5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good yarn! 1 Feb 2013

Format:Kindle Edition There is little a man wouldn’t do for the happiness and security of his loved ones. When respectable, successful, hardworking, high-living businessman Mike Balmayne sees everything he has worked hard for all his life snatched away from him, he reacts with surprising courage and initiative. But beyond his insouciant Irish charm and good humour, the affable Mike has hidden depths. And Mike has friends – good friends. This is a well-paced and well-written thiller which sees this ex-navy man take to the air and the sea in pursuit of rough justice and revenge. This book is ‘unputdownable’ and the writer takes us all the way with Balmayne, to some exotic locations which the author clearly knows well. The characters are well-drawn and credible, the dialogue sharp and the action gripping. Anyone who has lived in Portugal will laugh out loud over the crack about the local police. This is an engaging plot and makes a thoroughly enjoyable read, especially if you are lying in the sun, on the deck of your yacht, observing the position of the sun over your yardarm and working up a thirst for your first drink of the day – or sitting on the train to work and imagining yourself there! A good first outing from a talented writer from whom I do hope we shall see more.

Having heard about this book being in the pipeline for some considerable time I had no idea what to expect. Not being one of your average book-worms it takes something intriguing with a good story-line and some ‘ducking and diving’ to hold my attention. And this has it. I read it cover to cover in two outings.

The introduction of his family, wife, son and daughter along with his professional life style and committments is highly plausible as someone who works hard plays hard and exhudes an honesty which he wears on his sleeve and expects the same of others. Unfortunately in the high octane powerhouse of business, legit or otherwise, honesty can be as real as a Fata Mor’gana.

In the midst of some well earned family time he discovers just how much his honesty of others is a very scarce if not non existant commodity.

His comfortable middle/upper class world suddenly collapses around him leaving him and his family very close to ‘skid-row’.

With his back against a seemingly immovable wall his keen Irish brain and past naval experience which built his successful business and provided all the trappings of comfort for his family is about to be played out across Europe.

The story will keep you riveted to the very last chapter.

Whilst the book flows well from cover to cover the story-line leaves ample opportunity for a sequel to be spawned from this thrilling yarn.

  1. You have very nice blog here. Only one thing what I noticed, it was very hard to find it from google (at least with my search term). You should use plugin like that: It will get you better ranking in google. I use it all my wp blogs. If you have any problems to use it, just send me email and I try to help.

    1. Thanks for that, Jackie. I’m not sure how gifting a download works i.e. who do I gift it to and to where? Once I find out I will do so for you! Your post inspiration place to write – I’ve just had one of those in Venice. Movie to be posted on my blog today

  2. After I originally commented I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments
are added- checkbox and now each time a comment
is added I get 4 emails with the exact same comment.
There has to be a means you can remove me from that service?
    Many thanks!

    1. Hi, a little mystifying as I can not find a comment from you on my blog! When did you send the original? I will continue to look into it and try and stop it occurring. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    2. Had a good look now. I only started the blog last week and so far there are only two new comments, your presumably second message and a weird broken English one. So there is something amiss with the website which I will take up with wordpress

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I will be writing a lot more shortly. I have started the sequel to my first novel and hope to have it published in the next few months.

      Kindest regards

    1. I checked out your website and cannot find anywhere to comment. I have always loved the piano (in particular Scott Joplin!) and would have liked to learn to play but old age and the fact that I live on a yacht makes that difficult. All the best wishes for 2014.

  3. Hmm it appears like your website ate my first comment (it was
extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say,
I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring
blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any helpful hints for newbie blog writers?
    I’d definitely appreciate it.

    1. Thanks Claribel,

I’m not sure that I can help, I have only been using this blog for a few months. What is the main theme of your blog? In my case, it is promotion of the novels I am writing. One published already and one third of the way through writing with another as part of a planned trilogy. One thing I will say is that whatever the intent is do not concentrate on that solely, post anything else that you have an interest in, or a news tropic (Etna is actually erupting at the moment close to where my yacht is in Sicily). Read as many other blogs as you can and add comments as you have here!

      Kindest regards

Ned (William is my author name, everyone calls me Ned!)

  4. Hello! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with
hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up
losing many months of hard work due to no data backup.
Do you have any methods to stop hackers?

    1. Hi, no, no trouble so far with hackers. I have a blog not .com (you have to pay for that) and there is an automatic back up on their server including keeping drafts of posts you have yet to publish. If you are a commercial concern it might be worth considering. Also the askimet plug-in provides blog protection. Hope this helps!

  5. I’m really impressed with your writing skills as
well as with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme
or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare
to see a great blog like this one today.
